Community

Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) was established by the Mirarr to represent their rights and interests in 1995. Land rights and aboriginal self-determination have always been at the forefront of the corporation’s activities. For the first decade of its existence GAC’s work and focus was almost exclusively on the campaign to stop the Jabiluka uranium mine as the mine’s development posed an imminent threat to Mirarr country and culture.
Since 2007 GAC has also sought to alleviate the social distress caused by mining and socio-economic disadvantage by developing and implementing a range of community initiatives.

Regional health, education, social and cultural initiatives undertaken by Gundjeihmi include the following:

  • Publication of the health promotion and cross-cultural awareness book Bininj Gunwok Talk About Health. Provision of book to regional health services and practitioners
  • Assistance with travel and accommodation for Mirarr families needing health services
  • Funding the Kakadu Community Centre and associated youth, community and family programs
  • Funding the Culture First Program within Jabiru Area School
  • Funding (Gundjeihmi) language lessons for community at Kakadu Community Centre
  • Funding the Gunbang Action Plan to address issues of alcohol harm
  • Chairing and facilitating the Gunbang Action Group
  • Continuing dialogue with licensees in the Kakadu area on alcohol issues
  • Supporting the Children's Ground initiative through the Kakadu West Arnhem Social Trust
  • Construction and operation of Djididjidi Residential College
  • Construction of new housing at Djirrbiyuk (Whistle Duck) outstation
  • Improvement of houses at Madjinbardi outstation
  • Community development planning at Madjinbardi
  • Planning and construction of outstation resource centres and ‘mini clinics’
  • Planning and construction of outstation community centres
  • Active facilitation and resource provision for health and welfare officials
  • Planned partnership with the Northern Territory Education Department on early childhood matters
  • Continuing dialogue with medical professionals regarding cultural sensitivity and facilitating community access
