NEWSREADER: The operator of the Ranger uranium mine in the Northern Territory has temporarily halted work on its underground expansion after soft ground began crumbling near a ventilation area. Energy Resources of Australia says the issue was spotted after the drilling of a shaft about 20 metres underground. The mine site is surrounded by Kakadu National Park.

ERA says all employees, contractors and equipment were removed from the top of the shaft on Friday afternoon. NT WorkSafe has been notified.
