NT news: Honour for Kakadu gift

THE man who gave his people’s land into an expanded Kakadu National Park to try to prevent more uranium mining won the Outstanding Achievement category of the inaugural Ochre Green Territory Environment Awards last night.
Jeffrey Lee, Djok clan, was named last night at a function at the Darwin Deckchair Cinema to kick off the Ochre Green Territory Environment Conference and workshop being held today and Saturday.
The sole member of the Djok clan is the custodian of the 1228ha Koongarra region, which is believed to contain a significant uranium deposit.
Senior Mirarr traditional owner Yvonne Margarula was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Northern Territory Airports won the Safe Climate Award. Larrakia woman Donna Jackson took out the Living Harbour Award. Anti-fracking group Protect Arnhem Land won the Nature Territory Award. Darwin Garden Education Network won the Green Living Award.
