SYDNEY--Energy Resources of Australia Ltd. (ERA.AU) said government officials had ordered it to shut its flagship Ranger uranium mine in Australia's Northern Territory indefinitely, following a spill of radioactive spill on Saturday.

The company, majority owned by Rio Tinto PLC (RIO), shuttered the Ranger mine after reporting a leak from a leach tank containing radioactive slurry. The news sent shares in the company down 13% Monday.

Darwin-based ERA said the suspension will remain in place until it can demonstrate to the government that its operations there don't pose a risk to people or the local environment.
