Jabiru Kabolkmakmen launch signals next chapter for Jabiru
Progress towards the post mining future of Jabiru took a significant next step on July 31st, 2019
Mirarr and the Northern Territory Government launched Jabiru Kabolkmakmen which means Jabiru: a great place and is called JKL for short.
JKL is a collaboration between the NT Government and Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation to support Jabiru's transition to its future beyond mining.
It exists to support the Mirarr Masterplan of making Jabiru a world leading ecologically sustainable, economically and socially vibrant community where traditional Aboriginal culture, all people and the natural environment flourishes.
Gundjeihmi Chairwoman Valerie Balmoore said: “Mirarr will always be here to look after this country, we are happy to be working with the Government to make sure Jabiru is a great town for everyone.
“We have a great opportunity to show and explain the World Heritage values of Kakadu to give tourists a more meaningful experience and to connect with other Indigenous groups worldwide.
“Bininj (Aboriginal) people have lived here for over 65,000 years and there is a lot the world can learn about sustainable living from that history. Jabiru will be a place where we can explore new partnerships for sustainability.”
